CHAPTER ELEVEN

As I stepped into Ruby’s house, the familiar scent of burning sage enveloped me. Each time I walked into this place, I felt like I was entering another realm where the city's noise and the world's chaos faded into the distance. Hailey hesitated behind me, her apprehension clear, but a gentle nudge from Flick urged her forward. The rest of the Witch Punks followed, comfortable in the expectation of the welcome Ruby always had for us.

I let my gaze wander across the room, settling on the potted ivy atop the bookcases along the far wall. The tender green tendrils accented the dark wood shelves as though the essence of nature declared this a sanctuary. A fire blazed cheerfully in the fireplace, and its warmth was more than functional. It helped Ruby’s house feel like home. Something about this place, a combination of Ruby's protective spells and her warm presence, eased the weight off my shoulders. It was as if every corner whispered words of comfort, reminding me of the numerous times Ruby had been my rock, guiding me through my darkest hours.

"Feels different, doesn't it?" Flick whispered close to my ear, her voice soft as a lullaby.

I smiled faintly. "Like stepping into the embrace of an old friend after a hard day."

Charlotte and Kai had already found their comfort spots. Charlotte clutched a plush cushion as she sat in one of the overstuffed chairs. A delicate vase captured Kai’s attention, probably another artifact from one of Ruby’s many adventures.

Beckham ventured deeper into the space, her gaze sharp and alert, ever the guardian. Even she let her guard down a touch, shoulders relaxing as she settled onto the sofa.

Veronica wasn’t about to let Hailey feel too at ease. She shot her a look I knew all too well—a silent promise of retribution should she overstep in this sacred space.

My fingers brushed against an old photo of a younger Ruby as I moved to a seat. Even in the image, her eyes peered into the depths of my soul, offering warmth and a gentle reminder to stay vigilant.

Whatever worries or threats lurked outside, we were safe within these walls, surrounded by friends and under Ruby's watchful gaze. For the moment, it was all that mattered.

Hailey lingered anxiously by the door, shifting her weight from foot to foot. Her gaze darted around at the unfamiliar mystical elements surrounding her, the candles, charms, and arcane-looking tomes. She crossed her arms tightly as if hugging herself for comfort and gnawed her bottom lip while studying an aged painting on the wall as though it might come alive.

I could read the self-conscious tension in every fidget and distracted movement. Whatever the cause, she was deeply uncomfortable here.

I stepped nearer and gently asked, "Hey, you okay? I know this is a lot."

Hailey started, then attempted a shaky smile. "Yeah, sorry. Just nervous energy, I guess." Her laugh sounded brittle as if she was on the edge of breaking into pieces.

"No need to apologize. Anyone would be on edge.
